This poor man lost his fingertips to frostbite. He was unable to reach the Pole alone.
Frostbite sounds like an innocent thing but it means that your flesh froze solid. Water in your body forms sharp crystals that piece cells. When the flesh thaws out the cells are all very dead.
This man had his fingertips sawed off. Recently he had a heart attack.
