Peary's reconnoitering team

This is the sled set up for reconnoitering at the Pole.
Peary went off in several directions with this lightly loaded sledge taking sextant readings. He made numerous observations for a total of thirteen single or six and a half double altitudes of the sun, taken at two different stations, in three different directions at four different times. The photo of the dogs shows that they were in healthy shape at the Pole. The best ones had been picked to go all the way and they were being fed double rations of pemmican. On the way home they fed the weaker dogs to the stronger ones.
