The Arctic Ocean floor

The North Pole Deep Ocean Trench

See the ridge rising from the ocean floor? That is the Lomonosov Ridge. Peary was hitting it with his sounding weights, but did not know what it was. Later this area was all mapped out by Navy submarines and they proved Peary's depths as being correct.

This map section shows how Henson & Peary started from Cape Columbia and their path to the Pole in 1909. Leaving Ellesmere Island the ocean floor is not deep. This amplifies the tidal effects of the ocean currents resulting in pressure ridges. Near the Pole the ocean floor is very deep - over 4,000 meters and 1909 expedition enjoyed smooth sledging in that area.
