Matthew Henson, Black Explorer, 1979, by Edward F. Dolan, Jr. - (Out of print.) The best Henson biography Nicely written - Dolan was a prolific professional writer when he produced his Henson book. Like Dark Companion it is complete in telling Matt's life story but also goes further after Matt's death to include developments such as schools named after Henson and the tablet in Maryland acknowledging Matt as Co-Discoverer of the North Pole. Well worth the effort of locating one on the used book market. 181 pages, index and nice photos. I paid $55 for a used copy in nice condition. Ex-library copies go for $15. |

PROVEN IN COURT TO BE PLAGIARIZED FROM DARK COMPANION No review is offered. Henson Biographer Bradley Robinson brought suit in New York on grounds of plagiarism. He won his case and a significant settlement. This is mentioned here because of the source of the title word Ahdoolo itself. Ahdoolo is a phonetic spelling created by Robinson and therefore does not appear anywhere in print prior to Dark Companion. As Robinson himself said "There were no Eskimo dictionaries to consult." He did, however, correspond in writing to Peter Fruechen who assured him his spelling looked appropriate. While the plagiarized title may be dramatic, Robinson found numerous examples of text and dialog borrowed from his original work. The Court agree with him. *Any author using the word "ahdoolo" is using copyright protected text. One should always credit the origin - Dark Companion. Thanks! Bradley Robinson, 1997 |
