Dear Mr. Robinson, ...perhaps it is a dialectic variation? Of course, this is assuming that the two ways to spell his name do not equate to two meanings. I would think "paluk" means "kind," but I've no clue to "miy" and "mahri." Wishing you all the best, Catherine Schreiber |

TESTIMONY FROM MATT HENSON We have received the following letter and a statement from the negro who accompanied Commander Peary to the Pole: I saw recently a statement that I had turned against Commander Peary. That is all newspaper talk. All I ever told the reporter was that the twelve pictures I had, Mr. Peary did not want me to use. I think I ought to have a chance to make a living. That was every word except this copy which I am sending you of what I did say in black and white, and if you or any one else call that turning against anyone I don't know how to start about it. I hope you will know all that I have said about Mr. Peary. MATTHEW A. HENSON. The gist of Henson's statement is as follows: "Peary has his proofs and they are in such shape that the most skeptical scientists will be thoroughly convinced. His data are in excellent shape and will leave no doubt in the mind of anyone. Peary did reach the North Pole. I was with him and knew the hardships endured, the determination of the leader, the discouragements that faced him, the hope of success which spurred him on, and the final exultation when he stood at the point where there was no north. Had Peary not reached the North Pole, he would be in the Arctic to-day, for his expedition was fully equipped to spend a year or two longer in the north. Peary was determined to win and nothing short of impending starvation would have induced him to turn south again. He did turn south, but not until he had reached the North Pole." Matthew A. Henson, 1910 |

From: BERNICEHAZEL@aol.com Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2001 23:59:33 EDT Subject: Matthew Henson by Debbie Allen Greetings, I am really glad that Ms. Debbie Allen is doing Matthew Henson. I would like to share this infomation with Ms. Allen. Henson was the sole discoverer of the North Pole. Peary hired him because he knew of Henson's reputation as an exploror. Their was a contest on which country would reach the North Pole first. Peary couldn't make it because of frostbite and asked Henson to continue tto find the North Pole for the US. Henson wrote a book called the Negro Explorer. He also married an Eskimo woman. I do the Black history spots for my radio station annually. Lastly after I'd interviewed Ms. Allen in NYC, she gave me her LA tel. number and fx.number. My mother lost them. I went to Howard as she did. My email is cmeroewimbs@hotmail.com. My tel. is 718 - 341 - 5763. My address is 163 - 38 145th Rd. , Jam., NY 11434 - 5115. I saw her at graduation 2001 at Howard but I didn't want to interfere with her schedule. I have 2 health books I want to give her. Please forward my information to her or either send her information to me. Thank you. In the Spirit, Cassandra Meroe Wimbs |

Attached are a couple photos of Fort Conger. The photo called FC, cabins is a picture of Peary and Henson's cabins. Peary's is on the left and Matt's on the right (with the large whale bone leaning on it). The picture called Peary Hut is an inside shot of Peary's cabin showing. I could not get any pictures of the inside of Matt's hut because he only had one small window open to the outside and therefore it was quite dark inside. Paul NorthWinds Arctic Adventures |

From: Janice Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 Subject: Re: Matthew Henson's possessions It's a crime not to find ways to share these treasures. One or more of the large fraternities/sororities might want to take on this struggle or someone like Bill Cosby might be encouraged to donate the money to help reproduce images of some of these artifacts so that they might be made more readily available to the general public. I'm sure his intent in donating these items to those institutions was to give them the most wide-reaching opportunity to instruct and inspire. This is really pissing me off. I will continue to visit your website. If you think of anyway I can help you bring these items to light, please let me know. I will give this some thought and make some inquiries. Perhaps the Museum of Natural History might be encouraged to mount an exhibit about Henson on the 150th Anniversary of his birth. This is not too far away and it would give them some time to borrow some of the pieces from the other institutions. What do you think? Janice |

From: Janice Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 Subject: website and book Dear Bradley Robinson- Matthew Henson has always been a hero of my father's and, through him, of mine. My father spoke to Mr. Henson a number of times in Harlem. My father spoke of Mr. Henson's heroism, force of personality, and the injustice he suffered with perhaps more passion and outrage than Mr. Henson probably permitted himself. I had the Good fortune to see the movie with Delroy Lindo and read the book Dark Companion. I purchased three copies of the book on e-Bay and will give two as gifts. I absolutely loved the book. I am also glad to see that the website clears up the point about Peary's shameful treatment of Mr. Henson. I think the animosity was not because Mr. Henson Got to the pole but that he Got there FIRST. The photographs of the Henson family are priceless. Where are Mr. Henson's effects? His clothes, letters, diaries, souvenirs? Thank you for a wonderful website. Janice |

From: "Henson, Cheri" Subject: Henson Family Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 Greetings! My name is Cheri Henson. According to my father, James S. Henson, we are related to Matthew Henson. I have no proof of this and I am curious as to how I can find out if this information is indeed true. Our family is pretty small, we've lost contact with most of our kin. I have made it my goal to locate and "reunite" with as many of my kinfolk as possible. If there is anything you can do to assist me in my search, it would be deeply appreciated. Please feel free to email me at cherih@plantco.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day Cheri Henson Subject: RE: Henson Family |

"Louis F. Sander" Bradley, What
a nice site! I am aware of Matthew Henson and his life, due to my
general awareness of black history. I came upon this site while
surfing the web. It is VERY nice to see so much about this fellow's
life. The family pictures are great (though I see he only had children
by his Eskimo lady, and those attractive people at the ship ceremony
don't look very Eskimo to me). I'll have to look at the site some more
to learn more about that. I didn't know about the ship, and I'm glad
to see it exists. Bradley, |
