Dear Bradley,
Since it seems that Robert Peary gets most of the credit for making it to the North Pole first, I was wondering if it is really known who first made it to the North Pole. If they kept journal records, you would think they would have written more about who got there first. I was also wondering if you knew if there were any surviving members of Henson's family that I could contact. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Will Mattimoe

Hi Bradley --

I've been a Matthew Henson fan for many years now and really enjoyed your Dad's book. Have read it multiple times, along with Henson's autobiography, etc. I appreciate the great work you've done with the photographs. It will be nice to have them in my home.

Thanks again!

Dear Sir- I made the tremendous mistake of buying a copy of the Bryce "book" when it first came out- which I deeply regret. I have since corresponded with the author- who did answer my critical letter- by saying- in part- "you are the only person who has contacted me who showed any "liking" of Robert E. Peary..." Yes, indeed- I'm a very proud "fan" of Peary! I'm not only astonished at the hate which is thrown at Peary- but- also AMAZED that on Shackleton seems to get any documentary time on PBS-NOVA- or anywhere else! What is going on?! Pls. folks- let's wake-up- and acknowledge the true and powerful "T.R." superstud HERO- who was ROBERT E. PEARY!!
Thanks! Doug

My grandmother's mother's side of the family (Lockwood, from Battle Creek MI) was supposedly with Peary on this expedition, or they were friends. He named his daughter (my grandmother) Mignon Ahnighito Murphy. I was told the name was also Peary's child's name. I in turn gave my daughter the same name as a middle name. Is there a way I can find the truth or information to this dilemma?

hi,do you all have any information on the whether or not Matthew Henson is a descendant of Josiah Henson, born a slave in 1789 in Charles County,
who escaped with his wife and children to Canada and started a large, successful freeman's community there. his autobiography, "Truth Stranger Than Fiction", was published in 1851 and is believed to have been the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

thanks for your help,

I am looking for family tree info on Robert Peary. My grandmother was Minnie Ellen Peary - Although, Robert was far removed from my grandmother - a great (or great great uncle), I know little else about her history and figure it is a place to start. Can you help? Or do you know someone who can?

Subject: Mathew Hanson

Dear Sir:
I have read about Mr. Mathew Hanson and agree he was a very brave and courageous man.  I am retired from the United States Air Force, during my military career, I was stationd in Tule Air Base for one year.
Admiral Peary established a home base in Tule or nearby. he and Mr. Hanson lived with the local eskimos for quite sometime. Both had families there living with the local people. There were lot of Danish men working there in Tule AB, as you know Greenland belongs to  Denmark. We, the military were not allowed to go off base to the nearby village, called "Dundus" (sp?). But, the Danish men could go to the villiage and were friends with the people living there. A Danish friend of mine, gave me a picture of 4 young men, 2 were eskimos and the other 2 were grandsons of Mathew Hanson. These 2 young men were much taller than the other 2. On the back of the picture, is written Mathew Hanson. That's all. There is no message of any kind. My Danish friend told me, that these 2 young men were the grandsons of Mathew Hanson. And that Admiral Peary also had a family there. Is there any truth to this? Thank you for your comments.

Paul
