Matt is shown here aboard the ship Roosevelt. He had just returned
from the Pole after a 1,000 mile round trip sled trip. He was exhausted,
had lost 60 pounds of his body weight. Matt said his arms looked like
"withered stems".
"There are many that consider this modest volume the high point of twentieth century polar exploration. It also holds a place of honour in the literature of black studies. Henson was a key member of Peary's expedition and his perceptive and down to earth chronicle is certainly one of the most readable of the genre. It drips with enthusiasm." Matt's book is a classic! I had to pay $650 for this copy. The asking price was $750 but I asked for a discount! While it looks to be almost new, in fact I had to restore the white lettering with a digital airbrush. It took over 3 hours. Henson, Matthew A.: A Negro Explorer at the North Pole ; New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1912. 1st edition, Very good, Octavo, A solid copy of one of the high points of exploration literature. $750.00 |
